Winterville, North Carolina (January 8, 2013) – At 8:30 a.m. eastern time Thursday, January 10, this year’s Academy Award Nominees will be announced. North Carolina Jewelry Designer Ileana Rojas-Bennett, CEO of Maleku Jewelry, has reason to pay close attention. Last week she received an invitation of a lifetime: her handcrafted jewelry line was selected to be part of the Oscar Nominees Swag (Stuff We All Get) Bags and she will be heading to Los Angeles in February to participate in the 85th Annual Academy Awards festivities.
Rojas-Bennett also mentioned that Ms. Connecticut and Ms. Long Island, contestants in the Miss America pageant program, would be wearing Maleku Jewelry during their respective competitions.
After two successful New York Fashion Weeks, plus a rewarding Independent Retail Week display at Madison Avenue’s Clarins Skin Spa, Maleku Jewelry returns to Manhattan for what is considered one of the top accessory trade shows in the country. As the creative force behind Maleku Jewelry, Ileana combines colors and textures to give each piece its own uniqueness and style. “I grew up in a vast display of rain forest stimulations – the many hues of the water and trees and the grain of the volcanic soil, and I try to bring this inspiration to each piece.
Maleku Jewelry takes its name from the indigenous and extraordinarily artistic Indians of northern Costa Rica, of which Mrs. Rojas-Bennett is descended. Unfortunately, this tribe is rapidly disappearing as their culture and art vanishes as well. Although there are only about 500 true Malekus left in Costa Rica, this group has miraculously managed to preserve their treasured art and creativity, time-honored crafts and cherished language, and Maleku’s customers can take pride in knowing part proceeds of Maleku Jewelry’s sales are donated to the Maleku Indians.
